CanOSS Ontario Launches to Strengthen Maternal Health Surveillance

The Canadian Obstetric Survey System (CanOSS), in partnership with BORN Ontario, has launched CanOSS Ontario, the first provincial pilot of a national initiative designed to better understand severe maternal complications and translate findings into safer care.

The initiative will use confidential, multidisciplinary case reviews to identify patterns and modifiable factors contributing to severe maternal morbidity. The Ontario pilot includes 24 birthing facilities and brings together expertise from obstetrics, midwifery, nursing, family medicine, critical care, obstetric anaesthesia and internal medicine.

The first review cycle will focus on severe postpartum hemorrhage, with future cycles expected to examine other serious maternal conditions, including sepsis and complications from preeclampsia.

CanOSS Ontario launched on October 5, World Postpartum Hemorrhage Day, highlighting the importance of learning from severe maternal complications and using data and shared expertise to improve maternal health outcomes across Ontario.
