Sociodemographic and Social Determinants of Health Data in Perinatal Care

BORN Ontario recently surveyed hospitals, midwifery practices and public health units across the province to better understand how sociodemographic (SD) and social determinants of health (SDH) data are collected and used in perinatal care.

Findings highlight both progress and opportunities for improvement, with 74% of responding organizations collecting and using SD/SDH data, while 90% identified barriers to data collection. The results point to a need for a more coordinated, system-wide approach to support equitable care and health system planning.
