The Birthing Bundle: Supporting Safe, Standardized Obstetrical Care

The Birthing Bundle is a comprehensive resource developed by the Northern Maternal Child Network (NMCN) to support partner facilities in delivering safe, effective obstetrical care.

Designed for Level 1 and Level 2 obstetrical care facilities, as well as Emergency Departments, the Bundle provides a detailed readiness checklist across essential care categories. These include:

• Laboratory testing and diagnostics

• Medications and IV/infusion equipment

• Monitoring tools and emergency equipment

• Pain management and anesthesia resources

• Delivery and newborn resuscitation supplies

• Postpartum care for both mother and newborn

• Personal protective equipment and hygiene supplies

• Required staff roles, certifications, and competencies

All elements are organized in a clear, user-friendly chart format, making it easy for teams to assess readiness at a glance.

The Birthing Bundle aligns with guidance from the Provincial Council for Maternal and Child Health, as well as Ontario Health regional designations for perinatal care. This ensures that facilities have access to consistent, evidence-informed standards for Level 1 and Level 2 services.

In addition, the Birthing Bundle is a toolkit for clinical documentation and reporting, featuring essential BORN Registry Resources such as the Data Entry Guide for Non-Birthing Hospitals and a detailed Encounter Requirements Table.

By helping hospitals identify strengths, address gaps, and plan for optimal care delivery, the Birthing Bundle enhances system-wide readiness and improves outcomes for mothers and newborns across the region.
