By consolidating nationally recognized pediatric nursing standards into a flexible competency checklist, it promotes consistent, family‑centered care, supports onboarding and performance appraisals, and enables continuous professional development and accountability within nursing practice.
This Neonatal Nursing Technical Skills Checklist is a compendium document to the Practice Standards for Neonatal Nursing Practice in Ontario (2021). The checklist is to be used in conjunction with the Standards as well as any relevant hospital policies arising within the site’s region, procedures and guidelines. This skills checklist includes suggested neonatal nursing skills that can guide the skill development of individuals who work in Level 2 Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs), Level 3 NICUs as well as novice NICU nurses who are completing their orientation/preceptorship and who are expected to demonstrate competence in all relevant Level 2 and/or Level 3 skills by its completion.
The NMCN has developed a comprehensive mentorship framework to streamline and strengthen mentor partnerships across northern hospitals, supporting structured and effective mentorship for obstetrical healthcare professionals. By emphasizing site-specific assessments, tailored learning objectives, strategic mentor–learner matching, ongoing evaluation, and collaboration between hospitals, the framework aims to enhance clinical skills, promote professional development, and improve the quality of care for women and children in the North.
The Birthing Bundle is a standardized, evidence-aligned resource developed by the NMCN to strengthen obstetrical readiness across Level 1 and 2 hospitals, and emergency departments by clearly identifying required equipment, supplies, staffing, and skills. By helping facilities assess gaps, plan to standards, and stabilize patients prior to transfer, the Birthing Bundle enhances system readiness and supports safer outcomes for mothers and newborns across the region.
